About Big Buddha Cheese

Cheese is one of those strains with a real story behind it. It started life in the Chiltern Hills in the late 1980s – a single female plant, a standout phenotype from a pack of Skunk #1 seeds, that happened to smell unlike anything else around at the time. That cutting got passed from grower to grower across the UK underground for years, changing hands through the Exodus collective and beyond. It never became a seed. It was always a clone. Which meant if you didn’t know someone who knew someone, you couldn’t get it.

That changed when the breeder behind Big Buddha Seeds got hold of the original clone. He spent years crossing it with a carefully selected pure Afghani male from his personal strain library – two years of selective backcrossing to lock in the taste and smell he loved. By 2002, the first Big Buddha Cheese seeds existed. He brought them to Amsterdam in 2005 and introduced them to the city’s best coffee shops. The following year, Big Buddha Cheese won Best Indica Seed at the 2006 High Times Cannabis Cup. A strain that had never existed outside UK circles suddenly had the whole world paying attention.

This version – Cheese x Reversed – is where that story ends up after another seven years of development. Using reversed pollen from the original Cheese clone as the father, the result is 100% pure Cheese genetics with no Afghani influence at all. It’s the most faithful seed expression of the original clone you can buy.

Strain Info & Growing

The Genetics

Standard Big Buddha Cheese crosses the Cheese clone with Afghani to build in yield and structure. This version goes further. The father here is a reversed Big Buddha Cheese – meaning the pollen comes from a feminised version of the Cheese itself. The result is a 100% Indica, feminised seed that’s as close to the original cutting as a seed can get. No sativa stretch, no Afghani influence on flavour. Just Cheese.

Flowering & Yield

Indoors, she’s done in 7 to 9 weeks. Outdoors, harvest comes at the end of October. Yields are solid – around 100g per plant indoors, and up to 500g per plant if you’re growing outside with space to work with. She’s not the most demanding plant in the tent, either. The Afghani heritage from the original cross bred in resilience that carried through to this version.

Smell, Taste & Effect

The aroma is everything you’d expect from the name – pungent, old-school, unmistakably Cheese. Once cured, the flavour shifts into something more complex: fruity and dank with that classic cheese bite underneath. The high is uplifting and clear-headed with no ceiling to speak of. It goes long. People who grew the original clone in the nineties describe it as the most authentic Cheese experience available in seed form.

Frequently Asked Questions – Big Buddha Cheese (x Reversed)

What makes the Cheese x Reversed version different from the original Big Buddha Cheese?

The original Big Buddha Cheese is a cross between the Cheese clone and a pure Afghani male. That Afghani influence improves yield and plant structure but adds a small amount of non-Cheese genetics to the mix. The Cheese x Reversed version uses pollen from a reversed (feminised) Cheese plant as the father instead. The result is 100% Cheese genetics – every trait, every terpene, every nuance of the original clone – in feminised seed form.

Is Big Buddha Cheese a good strain for beginners?

It’s one of the more forgiving Indica-dominant strains out there. The Afghani lineage in its background contributes natural resilience – it copes well with fluctuations in temperature and environment, and it doesn’t need perfect conditions to perform. Flowering is predictable and the plant doesn’t stretch excessively. Most growers find it easier to manage than more demanding sativa-heavy genetics.

How long does Big Buddha Cheese take to flower indoors?

Expect 7 to 9 weeks from the start of the 12/12 light cycle. Most growers report the 8-week mark as typical. Outdoors, she’s ready to harvest around the end of October in northern European climates.

What does Big Buddha Cheese smell like when growing?

It’s strong. The pungent, tangy Cheese aroma builds progressively through flowering and becomes very noticeable in the final few weeks. Carbon filters are a must indoors. The smell is that classic old-school UK Cheese – funky, dank, and hard to miss. Once cured, the flavour profile opens up with fruity notes alongside the signature cheese character.

Has Big Buddha Cheese won any cannabis awards?

Yes – it won Best Indica Seed at the 19th High Times Cannabis Cup in 2006, which was the moment the strain went from UK underground favourite to internationally recognised. Since then, Big Buddha Cheese has picked up multiple further awards including placements at the Highlife Cup and IC 420 Growers Cup. It remains one of the most decorated British-bred strains in cup history.

What’s the yield like on Big Buddha Cheese x Reversed?

Indoor yields come in at around 100g per plant. Outdoors with space to grow, you can expect up to 500g per plant – the extra room lets her express fully. She responds well to training methods like LST or topping if you want to push that indoor number up.

Big Buddha Cheese is the strain that took UK underground genetics global. Cheese x Reversed is the most refined version of it – seven years of work condensed into a feminised seed that gives you the closest thing to the original clone.
