Buddha’s Sister by Soma Seeds

Some cannabis strains become popular for a season before disappearing into the background. Other strains earn a reputation thanks to specific genetics that have stood the test of time. Buddha’s Sister falls clearly into the latter category. Originally released as Soma Skunk V+ by Soma Seeds, it quickly gained popularity in Amsterdam coffeeshops thanks to unique terpene profile, high resin content and perfectly balanced indica-dominant genetics.

This classic Dutch strain was created using a mixture of Afghani, Hawaiian and Reclining Buddha genetics, thus combining old-school resin production with unique terpene profile. Instead of focusing on candy flavours characteristic for many modern fruit-forward hybrids, it features complex taste and aroma with dominant cherry notes alongside resinous and earthy undertones.

At SeedMasters, we have a great appreciation for strains with long history behind them. While Buddha’s Sister is not merely remembered out of nostalgia, but due to specific genetic characteristics that made it stand out from other similar strains, its unique resin production, flavour and Dutch heritage made it one of the best-known strains by Soma Seeds.

Buddha’s Sister Genetics

Buddha’s Sister was bred using the three genetically different strains each of which was used to bring specific traits to the final result.

Afghani genetics provide dense resin production, indica structure and earthy taste that are typical for hashish plants that have been used for centuries. Hawaiian genetics add vigour and fruity terpenes to prevent the plant from being too heavy and one-dimensional. The third strain used for breeding was Reclining Buddha—a Soma Seeds creation with unique aromatic profile and specific structure that help create balance in Buddha’s Sister.

Instead of trying to achieve high THC level and trendy appearance, Soma Seeds created a strain with unique personality. That is how they managed to create an indica-dominant hybrid that is still very much relevant despite numerous innovations in the world of cannabis breeding. Its combination of unique resin-rich genetics and tart cherry terpenes makes Buddha’s Sister stand out from the majority of contemporary hybrids.

There are several reasons for the fact that Buddha’s Sister managed to gain so much popularity and remains relevant for so long. Its unique qualities go far beyond specific traits: all of them come together to form a harmonious plant.

Appearance

Unlike many indica cultivars that tend to be short and compact, Buddha’s Sister grows into a relatively tall plant with open branching that indicates the presence of diverse genetics. Long lateral branches that grow with some space between flowering points ensure good airflow inside the canopy and allow excellent flower development.

During the flowering stage, large clusters of resinous buds continue developing until dense flowers with good aeration are formed. Thanks to natural open structure of the plant, it becomes easier to grow Buddha’s Sister successfully in various conditions.

Visually, the appearance of the flowers changes significantly as maturity comes. Bright green calyxes gradually disappear under thick layer of trichomes that cover not only the buds but sugar leaves as well. Long amber pistils twist among the resinated flowers, creating beautiful contrast and giving the buds amazing bag appeal.

One of the main characteristics of Buddha’s Sister is certainly its heavy resin production. At the mature stage, it produces sticky and greasy flowers characteristic for traditional resin-rich Dutch strains.

Our Take

At SeedMasters, Buddha’s Sister looks like a strain that has earned classic status without being in the spotlight all the time. Tart cherry terpene profile and exceptional resin production make it very much distinct from many modern hybrids, while high quality and unique appearance show once again the expertise of the breeders of Soma Seeds. For the collector who wants to try Amsterdam coffeeshop strain, Buddha’s Sister remains a perfect choice.
